Appearing after almost two decades of significant developments in feminist thought, the second trilogy challenges the patriarchal assumptions present in the first and revisions Earthsea with greater consciousness of gender. The second was published eighteen years later, beginning with Tehanu: The Last Book of Earthsea (1999) and followed by Tales from Earthsea (2001) and The Other Wind (2001). The first, which includes A Wizard of Earthsea (1968), The Tombs of Atuan (1970), and The Farthest Shore (1972), became the target of feminist critique for its male bias. Le Guin’s Earthsea Series, which is composed of six books, is often grouped by critics into two trilogies.
